Jani Rantanen. Born on September 23rd, 1981 in Tampere, Finland, and currently residing in the same city. Got introduced to electronic music in early 90s through some synth-pop records of that time, and shortly after that found dance and trance music. I listened to that type of music quite a lot, and eventually they had impressed and inspired me to the point of wanting to try doing some of my own; especially since I was also practising keyboards at the time.
By studying some tracker (mod) music I downloaded off some BBS sites I was able to start messing around with a few samples, and after a few years of practising, decided to come online with my stuff. Receiving feedback from fellow listeners and producers was invaluable in improving the skills, and it all led to a long-lasting hobby that is still, regardless of changed methods and software, very dear to me today.
Characteristics that are typical to techno, have influenced my music almost always, and my other, still-active project Incolumis that has been around since 2002, mainly focuses on that. As I found lots of new music during the time, and genres like ambient quickly growing on me, I started feeling like wanting to try out something different. Eventually in 2009 I decided to branch out by starting Jani R for downtempo, ambient and such. Over time these two projects of mine have come a bit closer to each other in terms of sound, but will remain distinct enough to serve their purpose as channels for everything I currently enjoy producing.
I like to think that there is always something new to be learned about music, just like music makes us learn about ourselves. Taking a risk of seeming a bit clichéd, I'm going to leave it here for conclusion.
